FEELING IN THE FOLDING OF MULTIPLE CATASTROPHES
Publication design Layout design Photo editing Graphic design
This project involves designing a publication for On Being Affected: Feeling in the Folding of Multiple Catastrophes. The piece explores today’s overlapping crises—climate change, social upheaval, and the third media revolution—and how they shape human emotion, a concept called "catastrophic multiplicity." Instead of offering solutions, it examines how these forces intertwine to create unease and unsettle our sense of the future.
brief
The project involved designing a publication that conveys the emotions and feelings of the text through creative visual manipulation and type layout. The goal was to push the boundaries of conventional design, creating a layout that resonates deeply with the emotions expressed in the text, offering a more immersive and impactful experience for the reader.
explanation
To convey this chaotic atmosphere, I designed the publication with a dense 12x12 grid, allowing for varied text box sizes and positions. This layout, combined with duplicated paragraphs, enhances the feeling of catastrophic multiplicity.
The concept of constellation and multiplicity is central to my design, reflected in the manipulated images throughout the publication. Photographs are cropped to emphasize certain elements, particularly eyes, and are scaled to create a sense of shared feeling and chaotic energy. This approach highlights the idea of interconnected crises and their complex impact on our emotions.
